Ty and Tobias flew into the fortress, landed and demorphed. As they walked, Ty said, "Um...you wanna do the talking? I'm more of a fighter." They were soon in David's office, facing him. "David...I um...found the cause of the...fluctuation. And I would also like to join the Brotherhood. I'll explain my reasons later." The last part, Ty said to both David and Tobias.

Tobias shrugged. He was never much for talk either, but after all the things he'd had to do while leading the Animorphs, he had learned. He looked over David. Maybe this was how his David would look in the future... maybe.
He wasn't really sure how to introduce himself, though. "Um, Ty? Maybe you should make the introductions. I can't really imagine a good way of doing this..." Tobias took a deep breath. "I'm from a different reality. And there...well, there you're a little white rat who hangs out with my kid brother." He stuck out his hand. "My name is Tobias."

"David, like he said, this is Tobias....from another reality. It's an AWESOME story, if you wanna hear it." Ty grinned his signature grin. "Well, that's pretty much it. David, I still wanna join the Brotherhood, but there's someone I would like to see first. You wouldn't happen to know where Carolyn is and what she's up to?"

David took a long look at Tobias. He looked similar to the Tobias David had known; the Animorph. "Another reality, you say?" David questioned. "I have seen worlds you cannot imagine, Ty...my eyes have been opened to worlds far beyond this one... Only one thing is impossible. Tobias will have to prove himself before he is fully accepted. Have him tell his story to Salheer."
Tobias flinched and then glared at David's secretary. "Some things change. Some never do," he muttered.
David continued. "I will summon Carolyn in due course, Ty. But there are some things that must be taken care of, first. My people must inspect both of you to ensure that nothing has happened to you. It is...dangerous...outside of my walls. And before that, you must tell me, Ty: what happened to Rook?"

Ty swallowed when David asked what happened to Rook. Crap! I forgot the big lug was with me... Ty shook off his nervousness and shock, and brushed his hair out of his face. "Um, well, you see, we, uh....kinda...." Ty studdered, trying to think of a good excuse.

"What are you trying to tell me, Ty? I would hate to think that-" David was cut off when Rook stormed into the room. There was blood on his coat, and he looked as pissed off as he felt.
"YOU!" he jabbed a finger at Ty. "Who the hell do you think you are? You fly around like some hot-shot, get us shot down, throw yourself into some stupid fight, and then run off and leave me behind to die. It's people like you who are the reason for people like them," he spat, waving his arm as though to indicate the rebels. "I could've told you that we couldn't trust a man who abandoned his own kind in a time of war to go travel the galaxy with a damned Yeerk. I say we toss him to the rebels."
David nodded slowly. "Yes, Rook, what Ty did was wrong. But you, also, made a mistake. I doubt the Revenant could hold you for long. You could have used your time as their prisoner to learn more. You could have gotten a view of their defences, the layout of their encampments, the routes they take... THey would have taken you right into the heart of their resistance like the fools they are. And you squandered that opportunity. I will not punish stupidity and selfishness today; I would hate to have to kill both you and Ty."
Rook looked at the ground, unsure what to say. David turned to Salheer. "Take Rook for processing. You never know what he might have...picked up...from the rebels. And what do you have to say about this, Ty?"

"Well," Ty said frankly, "I spent the entire time fighting, at first with Tobias, then the Revenant. Traded words with Alex, had a run-in with some general or something. While this was going on, Rook wasn't doing squat. The entire time, so we left him to do his business."
Ty looked David in the eye, knowing that the man before him had the power to take him down by just saying the word, but Ty Smith never backed down...

David turned to Rook. "We will discuss your behavior at another time." Then he turned back to Ty. "So, Ty, let me be sure I understand exactly what happened. I sent out out on a simple mission to investigate an energy flux. Instead of taking a quick little scan, you succeeded in getting shot down and nearly captured. You managed to get yourself surrounded. And then you decided it was a good idea to start a fight. And for some reason, you decided to bring your opponent home for dinner."
David shook his head. "You haven't changed a bit. Kneel, Ty. Get on your knees."

"Well," Ty said calmly, "he was the cause of the flux. And it's not my fault we got shot down. I wasn't driving... The resistance shot us down, me and Tobias have a little brawl, and discover, 'HEY! We're not so different.'" Ty paused, his voice steady, though Adrenaline was starting to flow. "Don't blame me. Blame the Revenant. It's their stupid fault."
Then David said, "You haven't changed a bit. Kneel, Ty. Get on your knees." Ty stepped back. "Whoa! WHAT? Um...dude, I know we were bros and all twenty years ago but...DUDE! I'm sorry, but man....that's just...."

David turned to Saheer. "Bring me my sword." He turned back to Ty. "There are many members of our family, Ty, but few who can be considered members of our Brotherhood. You were right; we were like brothers twenty years ago. You have not changed. You are still the same man I knew then." Salheer returned quickly with an ornate sword that David liked. It once belonged to George Washington. David thought it was rather ironic that he used it.
David took the sword. "So, Ty, get on your knees. How else do you expect to rise as one of us?"

"Oh," Ty said when Salheer brought out the sword. "Right," he nodded. Ty stepped forward, and knelt down before David to be knighted. Ty was finally back where he belonged, for the most part. He was back at David's right hand. Where he belonged. After all, what's a leader without a lunatic to back him up? Ty thought jokingly to himself, though his face was as serious as it had ever been.

David placed the flat side of the sword against Ty's left shoulder. "When we began, we were alone." He moved it to his right. "Through fire, our family grow." He placed it on Ty's head. "And all else becomes ash." He handed the sword back to Salheer. "Rise, Ty Smith, and welcome to the Brotherhood."
He turned to Salheer. "Have Ty decontaminated, and then take him on a tour of our facilities. There is much he needs to be shown. I will join you shortly." Then he turned to Tobias. "You and I need to speak privately. After you are decontaminated as well."
